Simultaneously, a liquid sodium or potassium silicate-based densifier is applied. This chemical soaks into the pores of the concrete and reacts with the free lime and calcium hydroxide present in the slab. - Applying the Densifier: The liquid densifier is applied to harden the floor. The concrete is allowed to cure for a specified time (often a few hours) before the process continues.
- Polishing the Surface: This is where the shine begins to appear. Resin-bonded diamonds, starting around 100 or 200 grit and progressing to 400 or 800 grit, are used to buff the surface to a satin or semi-gloss finish.
- Final Polish (Optional): For a high-gloss, mirror-like finish, the process is continued with very fine grits of 1,500 or even 3,000 grit diamond pads.
- Sealing and Burnishing: A stain guard is applied to protect the floor from oil and water-based stains, and the floor may be burnished (polished with a high-speed buffer) to enhance the final shine.

The process requires heavy-duty, walk-behind concrete grinders and industrial vacuums to manage the significant dust generated.
